#15 Non-linear narrative - flashbacks
A non-linear narrative is disjointed and events unfold out of chronological order. The narrative can jump between points of time. For example a flashback, where memories are being replayed. Flashbacks interrupt the story to show past events. These flashbacks can provide quite a bit of information to the story and plot.
Flashbacks are used a bit often in romance films especially when it comes to past lovers/past relationships. Flashbacks provide important backstory, or meaning to the story. In romance films flashbacks can show the evolutions of relationships. In films flashbacks are used to show a person remembering moments, having either regret or nostalgia.
Flashbacks are a way to bring emotions into a scene and a film. The use of flashbacks may disrupt the chronological order, but it deepens the backstory. I want my film to use flashbacks for that exact reason. If the audience sees the flashbacks of the couple the audience can understand the reason for what the character does next. Seeing the memories of the characters will bring context of why the character reacts the way she does. Having this context also helps with the backstory but as well as the emotional appeal.
