#21 Editing platform

Image
Editing platforms is what is needed to put your film together and add your final touches. Editing platforms allow you to add your sounds, effects, and clips in whatever order you want. The purpose of having your editing platform is to make your film become a film. Using the right platform is important too, and knowing how to use it will help your process go by faster and easier. For my editing platform I will be using imovie, this platform is really simple to use, and allows you to do what is needed to help make your film.  I will use this platform to help add my non-diegetic sound, credits, and cut my clips. Knowing how to use this platform will help me get through my editing process as efficient and quick as possible.

#20 Movie description

Image
Every movie and show has a description, the point of this is to explain what the movie/show is about. A movie description outlines the core narrative, introduces the key characters, and sets the tone, not revealing any big spoilers or the ending. The movie description includes the plot outline, conflict, the main character/characters, and the setting.  This is a description from the film "Finding Her Edge". This description describes the plot, the characters and the conflict. I want my description to describe the main plot of the man trying to navigate what all these old photos and videos mean. Also stating the main characters, Lincoln Matthews and Gina Johansson. The conflict is the growing realization that his relationship isn't what he believed it to be.  A man named Lincoln Matthews, discovers old photos and videos of him and his ex lover Gina Johansson. As he looks through the old photos and videos. At first when he discovers these old memories, he feels happy and m...

#19 Character Auditions

Image
This is Ainsley, she is a teenager. She is blonde with blue eyes. Her acting skills are pretty good when serious, though it is difficult for her to focus. Her soccer schedule intervenes with the filming schedule. Her role would be the ex girlfriend. She is a bit young and doesn't really have the talents to fill the role.   This Phillip, he is a teenager. He is a brunette with brown eyes. His acting skills aren't the greatest, he is always free so no intervene with the filming schedule. His role would be the main man character. He is also a bit young and he does not have the acting skills needed for this role. This is Sean, he is in his mid thirties. He is a brunette with blue eyes. He is pretty good with acting, especially since he has experience with auditioning for films. His work schedule does not intervene with film days. His role would be the main man character. His age is pretty good for the story line, and his skills needed for the role makes him a good candidate. Thi...

#18 Editing

Image
Editing is a post-production process, it involves enhancement of raw footage and sound. Editing can have a effect on how an audience interprets a media text and how they feel when they consume it. Now there are two types of systems when in editing. Continuity and non-continuity systems. Continuity systems is a system of editing where time and space are consistent, and events occur in chronological order. Non-continuity systems are a system of editing where time and space are disrupted. My story is already using a non-linear narrative, so I plan to use non-continuity since it has a disruption in time and space. Also using this system is good to show backstory, in my case to use for showing the memories and what the character is reflecting on. Having this system is good for storytelling.

#17 lighting

Image
Lighting is another way to create a certain mood and establish atmosphere. The use of artificial lighting and natural light help with creating moods and atmosphere. Lighting can influence perceptions of character and place. It can direct the audience's attention in a scene. Natural lighting is lighting that occurs naturally. Artificial lighting is man-made.  Specific lighting is used when it comes to different genres. Since my film is working with the romance genre I want to use the common conventions of lighting. High-key and low-key lighting are used in romance films to present joy, happiness or more of a down mood. I want to use high-key lighting when it comes to the happy scenes that were playing. Natural lighting is used to give off joy and happiness so for the memories of the couples it will be more realistic. Since the romance genre uses more warm and cozy lighting to make the scenes feel more intimate and have comfort. Using artificial lighting will help achieve this ...

#16 Color theory

Image
Color can help to create mood. Colors acquire socially accepted connotations when used in particular contexts. Colors can mean different things in different genres. The use of colors is to provoke certain emotions, also enhancing the storytelling. When you are analyzing it's important to remember to consider the country of origin, since it can dictate the intended meaning by the producers. Colors that produce multiple meanings are colors like red, white, green, all signify different things based in different genres. White in western culture it signifies purity, while in Eastern cultures it refers to sorrow, bad luck or loss. Black can signify death, red can signify blood.  When it comes to romance films, red/pink , white, yellow. Red/pink is used for intimacy, charm, innocence. White is used for innocence, clarity, purity. Yellow is used for energy, it is good to use for a warm feeling. When it comes to using colors in my film I would like to use yellow and white to have a pure ene...

#15 Non-linear narrative - flashbacks

Image
A non-linear narrative is disjointed and events unfold out of chronological order. The narrative can jump between points of time. For example a flashback, where memories are being replayed. Flashbacks interrupt the story to show past events. These flashbacks can provide quite a bit of information to the story and plot.  Flashbacks are used a bit often in romance films especially when it comes to past lovers/past relationships. Flashbacks provide important backstory, or meaning to the story. In romance films flashbacks can show the evolutions of relationships. In films flashbacks are used to show a person remembering moments, having either regret or nostalgia.  Flashbacks are a way to bring emotions into a scene and a film. The use of flashbacks may disrupt the chronological order, but it deepens the backstory. I want my film to use flashbacks for that exact reason. If the audience sees the flashbacks of the couple the audience can understand the reason for what the chara...

#14 Decoding

Image
Decoding is when the audience has to decode the message-interpret what is being communicated. There are 3 types of decoding positions, those three are dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. Dominant is when the audience accepts and understands the intended meaning. Negotiated is when the audience uses their own beliefs to adapt to the intended reading. Oppositional is when the audience rejects the intended meaning. Decoding allows for the audience to understand, negotiate or reject the intended meaning of the filmmakers.  Since my film will be about the character realizing one of them is always behind the character the audience will be able to decode that into one not liking to be in front of a camera. if the audience sees that one of the characters aren't in much of the videos only behind the camera, they can decode that the relationship might be happy, just not right. Though people might view the situation in different ways, either could be correct. Trying to leave some ga...

#13 setting

Image
In a film, the setting is the time and the place of where the story happens. The setting has a lot of purpose, for context, character development and more. In certain films, there is more than one setting. Changes in setting can lead to bigger messages. The setting can bring clues based off what is in the environment. Setting also influences the plot, it can give context to what the characters actions and motivations are. "Setting can convey important information about characters and their backgrounds through visual clues in their environment."  I want my setting to be based in a home, helping with the plot of the character finding old photos in their house of them and their ex lover. The home is the main setting, but the photos and videos show different places, also the flash back is based in a different place. The switch in backgrounds and places just shows the different moments the couple had. The setting being based in a home helps with the emotional, and relationship mo...

#12 Target audience

Image
When it comes to making a film, there is always certain people you want this film to reach. Maybe its for kids, maybe its for old couples. That's your target audience, the people you want to watch this film. Now there is more then just age that comes to play when finding your target audience. Things such as age, race, gender, religion, all can come into play when finding your target audience. When you are thinking of a film you are also deciding who it is targeted to, who you want to be attracted to the film. Maybe you want to make a film that is for teenagers who should be proud of who they are, that is apart of your target audience. To know who you want your film to be aimed towards can help you with your film idea. For my film I wanted it to be targeted to teenagers and young adults who maybe like plot twists and romance films. A film that doesn't necessarily have a lot of romance but also dramatic based off the plot twist. The age range to be from 16-30. Emotionally mature...

#11 plot twist

Image
It's never a good film without a plot twist. Maybe someone got backstabbed, maybe a sudden breakup. Most romance films have the "plot twist" of a couple seeming they aren't ever getting back together. Why do we need these plot twists? Well it brings for the audiences engagement. Jealousy, films with a plot twist of a character having motives. Plot twists is a way to bring your audience engagement up with the use of emotional depth. The relationship wasn't as perfect as the main character imagined it. One of them was always hidden behind the camera. Rarely ever any photos or videos together. Why is the one always in front of the camera and not the other? The audience is to question "why?".  Maybe the one isn't too comfortable with being on camera.  This plot twist doesn't show the relationship was fake it shows how it wasn't equal. The other person didn't believe the fact of having to be in pictures and videos to be loved. Audiences will ...

#10 preliminary exercise

Image
This is an example of a mid-shot. The use of a mid-shot is for the audience to be able to read the characters body language, hips up. As in this shot you can read the body language of the person, as you can see the character is disgusted/ and or uncomfortable. The shot lets you see how the character might be feeling, impacting the mood of the story based off how the character is in the environment.  This is an example of a two shot. The use of a two shot is of two characters, and it enables the audience to read their body language and interaction with each other. Two shot can tell the relationship between two people based off their body language and interaction. The focus is on how the two are interacting with each other will help impact the story and how the audience will interpret the scene. This shot is an example of an establishing shot. The use of an establishing shot is to show you a location. In this instance the location being shown is outside in a storm. The use of ...

#9 Camera shots

Image
Camera shots are used all around in films. Every scene, every clip is using a camera shot. Some shots make the scene more intimate. Certain shots are used to let you examine detail. Camera shots are used to guide the audiences attention, create a certain mood or atmosphere. Camera shots can also be used to convey a message or feeling. Different types of camera shots can create different emotions and moods. Camera shots capture the different types of moments. You can see certain types of shots used for different actions.  Since this is a romance there will be more close up shots to capture detail and emotions. There are certain shots that are used more for romance films. Two-shots are commonly used in romance films to capture shared moments between two characters. Dolly/Tracking shot when tracking movement. Establishing shot to set and establish the scene. To show dialogue and emotions between two characters, you would use a medium shot that frames the characters waist up. I w...

#8 casting

Image
Having the right actors for your film is very much necessary. You need someone who can fit the role. Actors are what makes these roles, they are what brings the characters to life. When you are casting for a film, directors know what to look for. Finding actors that can make your film is important since it can help with the audience's engagement. The actors are what makes the authenticity. When you are casting to need to know what actors will contribute to your film the most. Some actors are better with the dramatics, whereas others are better with being more natural. My film is about a woman who discovers old photos and videos of her and her ex-lover. I cannot have someone who is too young for the role, nor too old for it. The actor has to have the natural style when acting, doesn't over exaggerate their role when acting. The actor needs to have chemistry. The chemistry with an actor makes the story feel more natural and improves the story. There won't be much dialogue, so...

#7 diegetic sound

Image
When it comes to films diegetic sound is all around. Diegetic sound is the sounds that can be heard by the characters and audience. Diegetic sound is the sound that comes from that film's world. Plenty of times in films where you will see examples of diegetic sound. You can see it for example when characters are talking, music playing on a radio, even sounds of rain.  Diegetic sound is what makes a story "authentic". The use of diegetic sound makes for a "sense of realism for the audience". Unlike non-diegetic sound the sound that is presented to where the characters can also hear it makes the film more realistic and benefits the story more rather than just the audience.    When it comes to having diegetic sound in my film I want to have a few specific uses of it. I want to have music in the background, like a radio or tv having some nice music, it will help the romantic setting with calm, soft music. I will have sounds of a character going through stuff lookin...

#6 Foley sounds

Image
When it comes to filming videos, trying to get those specific sounds like footsteps in your video are hard to be loud enough. Foley sound is used to enhance those sounds. In films and movies they use this to enhance the realism of the sounds. Foley sounds are used post production to create these sounds. Foley sounds can include anything from footsteps to doors, glass breaking, chewing, and more. When it comes to foley sounds it is used to make the scenes more immense. Foley sounds are created by having a person record themselves mimicking the actual sounds.  This video shows examples how to create sounds in a scene by using different objects. Different objects are used to make certain sounds. The tapping of the metal scissors makes a clock ticking sounds, while the tugging of a cloth creates a heartbeat sound. The different objects imitate the sounds in the film. I plan to use this in my film to make some of the sounds in my video. I want to use the sounds to make you able to hear ...

#5 storyboarding

Image
These 3 clips represent the first few scenes of the opening scene. These 3 scenes will represent the start of the plot. These scenes are to plan out how I want my scenes to look. This storyboard shows where I want my scenes to occur at and how I want the things in my scene to be placed. The storyboard helps me plan out how I want my scenes to look and be focused on. The first planned out scene is what  I want one of my first clips of my film to be. This scene will establish the location for the first few clips. This scene will mean a lot when establishing the scene. This scene will set up the next few scenes. The second planned out scene is where you establish more of the plot. You don't necessarily know what's going on yet but you are leading up to that scene. You see the face of the character when she finds these photos but not yet knowing how she reacts when she looks at them. The third planned out scene is where you get an idea of what this plot will probably be about. Y...
